There is a lot of talk about Mitt Romney picking Marko Rubio as his Vice Presidential running mate for the 2012 race for the White House. Is there anything to these hopes and dreams behind all the talk and would Marco Rubio be a good choice?
I’ve seen my share of Presidential races and if Mitt Romney does, in fact, tap Marco Rubio as his pick for Vice President, he needs to know that Marco Rubio is a very young, very flawed, choice. In a time where the GOP field is littered with flawed Republican candidates, Rubio, though still very young, is very fundamentally flawed.
Why Marco Rubio Is a Bad Choice For Mitt Romney
It’s not secret that Mitt Romney, currently the presumptive Republican candidate for Presidential candidate, is looking to appeal to Hispanic voters along with younger voters and even women voters. The first primary target in Mitt Romney’s cross-hairs is the Hispanic voter and here is where some think that Marco Rubio , of Cuban parents, could perhaps draw Hispanic voters to a Mitt Romney/Marco Rubio ticket.
The Hispanic vote is very important as Hispanics are the fastest growing minority in the United States. Hispanics are also the major reason why President Barack Obama won out in 2008.
The problem is that as young as Marco Rubio may be and as bright as his future career might be, the fact is that he was caught in a major lie that divided the Cuban exile community in Florida and nation wide. This lie is going to haunt Rubio for a long time to come.
Rubio also has a tendency of letting his mouth run away with him and making politically negative flubs. Certainly nothing unusual for a freshman Senator but combining those elements with his age and limited experience in Government means that Marco Rubio could be an extremely risky choice.
Mitt Romney needs a strong running mate to shore up his flanks and Rubio would likely be a liability due to lying about his family fleeing Castro’s Cuba.
The Marko Rubio Lie
Marco Rubio started his political career by selling himself as the natively born son of Cuban exiles. He sometimes would passionately give speeches that his family escaped Castro’s Cuba during a tumultuous time when people were still able to escape from Cuba, mostly to the United States.
The problem is that that Marco Rubio was lying when he said his family was fleeing Castro, as his family actually left Cuba in the latter part of the 1950s. This means that Rubio was lying because his family left Cuba in hopes of making a better life for themselves in the United States. In fact Patrick Monteiga, editor of Tampa’s La Gaceta, goes into detail about how Marco Rubio’s grandfather was a supporter of the revolution and of Castro. Rubio’s grandfather hoped that Castro would defeat the dictator, American puppet, Batista and put Cuba on a positive socialist course to make life better for all Cubans.
In other words, Rubio’s family leaving Cuba in 1957, 3 years before Castro came into power, does not make them exiles, it makes them immigrants. Again, there is nothing wrong with being the son of immigrants but misrepresenting yourself as the son of anti-Communist, anti-Castro exiles, is.
It would be silly to think that if Mitt Romney chose Marco Rubio for his running mate that the Democrats wouldn’t go digging into Rubio’s background once again. With Mitt Romney already being a very flawed candidate, who is thought of as a flip-flop artist by his own party, the last thing Romney needs is Marco Rubio as a running mate as he still has the fresh stench of being labeled a liar.
You may ask, “So what if Marko Rubio lied about his family background?” The answer is that he used his fake family background to lie his way into office and if he was willing to lie to win a Senate seat, it begs the question, “What else has Marco Rubio lied about to get ahead?”
