The Lorax Movies

It seems Hollywood has spent the past several years rehashing and reiussing movies from 20, 30, 40+ years ago. One of these movies that is well worth revisiting is The Lorax, starring Danny Devito as the voice of the main character. Most of us have read the book written by the infamous Dr. Seuss in 1971, and some of us even remember the short 25 minute TV special made in 1972. The story is just as relevant and important today as it was 40 years ago. Both the new and old movies tell essentially the same tale; The Lorax, a small woodland creature, tries to stop a greedy industrialist, called the Once-Ler, from ruining the natural environment. The Once-Ler only cares about his own success and uses up all the natural resources causing all the woodland creatures to find a new home. He realizes too late that he has also ruined himself in the process after all the trees are gone.

How Are The Two Lorax Movies Different?

There are some noticeable differences between both movies. Most obviously, the 2012 version is longer (86 minutes). Also, the story is more from the viewpoint of a young boy. He lives in an enclosed town made completely of plastic and when he learns about trees, he wants to find out where to find one. His wise old grandmother tells him to go talk to the Once-Ler, who lives beyond the cement wall that encloses the town. The Once-Ler tells the boy the story of his origins and what he meant to accomplish. His face is actually shown as a young  man, wherein the original version, we only see his green arms and hands. The current version of the Once-Ler also has him being a bit more of a sympathetic character in which he wanted to be careful with the trees but just got carried away with wanting success. This is a contrast to the original Once-Ler who thought he knew better than the Lorax and disregarded his warnings.

The Message of The Lorax Movies Is Clear

Everyone, young and young at heart, can clearly understand the message of the story. If we take from the Earth, we need to give back. We need to replenish our natural resources.  Trees, plants and animals are essential for our survival. Success is fleeting, damage can be forever. The message needs to get across to everyone. Both of the Lorax movies (and book) should be seen by all audiences.
